Larry Madowo Responds to Accusations of Biased Reporting on Mathare Floods in Kenya

Larry Madowo Responds to Accusations of Biased Reporting on Mathare Floods in Kenya! CNN journalist Larry Madowo recently received backlash from some social media users after reporting on severe floods that impacted the Mathare area of Nairobi, Kenya. In his reporting, Madowo highlighted the devastation caused by the floods and waded through ankle-deep water in the flooded Mathare slum while expressing shock at the impact.

Some netizens accused Madowo of always focusing on negative stories about Africa in his reporting and claiming he was painting the continent in a bad light. In response, Madowo reminded people of a post he made last year where he stated that his job is to provide an accurate portrayal of stories in Africa rather than just positive coverage. He acknowledged that Africa faces challenges but also has joy, art, and innovation worth reporting on.

To defend himself against the accusations, Madowo pulled up this past statement to reiterate that his role as a journalist is to report facts about what is happening on the ground, whether positive or negative. He said he had warned people previously that his coverage would include the full spectrum of issues and accomplishments in Africa. Madowo pushed back against the notion that he is biased by simply reporting challenges like the Mathare floods.

The interaction sparked debate among Kenyan social media users. Some supported Madowo and said journalists should present the truth instead of hiding difficulties. They encouraged him to keep highlighting important issues. However, others felt he was being too negative or selective by only focusing on the floods in poor areas and not also covering flooded wealthy neighborhoods. A few labeled Madowo as petty or unpatriotic for “washing Africa’s dirty laundry” internationally through his reporting.

By publicly responding to the backlash, Madowo reaffirmed his commitment to objective reporting on Africa that includes both achievements and difficulties. The incident highlights ongoing discussions around how foreign media portrays the continent and the balance between positive and negative coverage of challenges affecting African nations.
