‘Anataka Kulipwa’ Pay Dispute Sparks Debate Over Stoopid Boy and Dr Ofweneke

‘Anataka Kulipwa’ Pay Dispute Sparks Debate Over Stoopid Boy and Dr Ofweneke! Kenyan comedian and TV host Dr. Ofweneke recently invited rising rapper Stoopid Boy, known for the viral hit “G Bag Na Jug,” to appear on his program on TV47. However, the scheduled interview was abruptly cancelled at the last minute by Stoopid Boy.

Speaking about the cancellation publicly, Ofweneke revealed to his studio audience that Stoopid Boy pulled out of the appearance because he wanted to be paid for his time. This disclosure sparked a major debate online around whether artists should be compensated for media interviews early in their careers.

Ofweneke expressed frustration with Stoopid Boy for the late cancellation, implying it showed unprofessionalism as an up-and-coming artist. He warned Stoopid Boy that this decision could damage future opportunities to promote new music through his show down the line.

However, many fans threw their support behind Stoopid Boy’s demand for pay. They argued if international acts are paid for Kenyan TV appearances, local talent deserves compensation as well. Their talents and time have value, even at the beginning of their careers.

Others, like fellow comedian Oga Obinna, were more critical of Stoopid Boy. But many comments acknowledged the complex issues around artist compensation in media interviews. While exposure can help emerging acts, being expected to perform unpaid labor perpetuates challenges in the industry.

The debate brought greater attention to questions of power dynamics and fair treatment of creatives. It remains unclear how much Stoopid Boy requested. But the divisive response highlighted an ongoing conversation about supporting local talent both creatively and financially. While Stoopid Boy’s decision highlighted issues with the current model, Ofweneke makes a fair point about responsibilities for up-and-coming artists. Establishing good working relationships within the industry lays foundations for longer-term success. Last-minute cancellations burn bridges and harm trust on both sides.
