Eleven people, including both prison officers and inmates, were injured in a road accident involving a Kenya Prisons Service vehicle in Homa Bay town.
Among the injured were five prison officers and six inmates who were passengers in the vehicle.
They sustained injuries when the Land Cruiser van, owned by Rachuonyo GK Prison, lost control and overturned on the Rongo-Homa Bay highway on Tuesday 4th June 2024.
Kenya Red Cross officials, in collaboration with police officers, rushed the victims to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital for medication.
Robert Basigwa, the Commander of Homa Bay County Prisons, reported that one of the officers suffered serious injuries in the accident.
“The officer with serious injuries was pricked by the rifle he was carrying, causing a stomach injury. As for the inmates, they survived with minor injuries and are out of danger.”
Basigwa, speaking after the incident, explained that the vehicle had been transporting the inmates from Homa Bay County Teaching & Referral Hospital, where they had received medical treatment.
“The inmates were being taken back to Rachuonyo Prisons after receiving medical care. The accident was unfortunate, and we wish them a quick recovery.”
