The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has announced the suspension of county-level grassroots elections in Nairobi County, which were set to take place on June 10, 2024.
On Friday, Anthony Mwaura, the Chairman of UDA’s National Elections Board (NEB), announced that the decision to suspend the polls was based on a resolution by the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal on June 6.
“The suspension, as per the directive from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on June 6, 2024, halts the Nairobi County election. Additionally, UDA’s election board will provide further instructions regarding the planned polls in due course,” Mwaura stated.
Mwaura stated that the Board would offer additional communication concerning the rescheduled date and any supplementary instructions in due course. He expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and conveyed appreciation for understanding and cooperation in the matter.
The anticipated elections were poised to showcase a showdown between Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s faction and a group aligned with Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.
Sakaja emerged as the frontrunner for the county chairmanship position, having garnered the backing of 240 delegates out of a potential 340 during the constituency-level elections.
“The suspension declared was issued pursuant to an order from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on June 6, 2024, halting the Nairobi County election. We will provide further communication regarding the rescheduled date and any additional instructions in due course. We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter,” the board stated.
In May, tumult broke out at numerous polling centers during UDA’s grassroots elections in various areas of Nairobi, resulting in the cancellation of the entire process.
