Malawi’s nation plunged into mourning as news broke that Vice President Saulos Chilima and 9 others tragically lost their lives in an air crash on Monday.
President Lazarus Chakwera conveyed the heartbreaking news during a solemn press briefing held on Tuesday afternoon, expressing deep sorrow and condolences to the nation.
Addressing the media, President Chakwera reflected on the enormity of the loss, emphasizing the profound impact it has left on the nation.
“Despite the experience of the crew, something terrible happened to that aircraft, sending it crashing down and claiming the lives of everyone on board,” he lamented, echoing the sentiments of grief and helplessness shared by the nation.
“He was a good man, a patriotic citizen. It was an honor to have him as my deputy in the past four years,” President Chakwera fondly recalled, paying tribute to Vice President Chilima’s dedicated service and leadership.
Chilima’s untimely demise occurred when the aircraft carrying him and nine others mysteriously disappeared from radar shortly after departing from Lilongwe on Monday morning.
Despite exhaustive efforts by aviation authorities to establish contact with the aircraft, all attempts have thus far proven futile, leaving the nation in shock and disbelief.
Born on February 12, 1973, Chilima’s illustrious career spanned various sectors, including his groundbreaking role as the first Malawian to lead Airtel Malawi, the nation’s leading mobile telecommunications company.
Prior to his tenure in telecommunications, he held senior positions in the banking sector and fast-moving consumer goods industry, leaving an indelible mark on each endeavor.
In addition to his professional achievements, Chilima was a devoted family man, cherished husband, and loving father to two children.
His legacy as a visionary leader and dedicated public servant will forever be remembered by the people of Malawi as they come together to mourn the loss of a beloved Vice President and esteemed citizen.
