In a dramatic turn of events at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi, a senior police officer was shot and killed on Thursday after he opened fire on a magistrate, injuring her critically.

The incident occurred shortly after Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti delivered a ruling in a case involving the officer’s wife.

The senior officer, who held the position of Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Kisumu, had traveled to Nairobi to attend the court session.

His wife was a suspect in the case and was seeking release pending the hearing and determination of the charges against her. The court proceedings were taking place in a tent outside the main court precincts, a common practice to accommodate the high volume of cases.

According to Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei, the incident unfolded just after Magistrate Kivuti delivered her ruling. The officer, who had been visibly tense throughout the session, went behind the tent and shot the magistrate. “Other officers who were present responded immediately and shot the officer, fatally wounding him,” Bungei stated.

The shocking event, which occurred around 2 pm, also resulted in another member of the public being injured. Both Magistrate Kivuti and the injured bystander were rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

The motive behind the officer’s actions is still under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest it may be related to dissatisfaction with the court’s decision regarding his wife’s case.

Authorities have cordoned off the area around the Makadara Law Courts, and a thorough investigation is underway to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the shooting.

Closure of the Madaraka Law Courts

Chief Justice Martha Koome has taken decisive action in response to the shooting of Principal Magistrate Monicah Kivuti at the Makadara Law Court premises.

Following the shocking incident, Justice Koome directed that the Makadara Law Courts remain closed until Monday next week to facilitate security reinforcement.

In her statement, Justice Koome emphasized the importance of safety for judicial officers and the sanctity of courtrooms. “The safety of our judicial officers and the sanctity of our courtrooms are paramount,” she declared, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The closure will necessitate virtual hearings for all matters scheduled at the Makadara Law Courts, with physical appearances redirected to the Milimani Law Courts until security reinforcement measures are completed.

Chief Justice Koome condemned the attack and called for urgent action to bolster security across all court stations in Kenya, expressing determination to prevent such incidents from recurring.
