The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has postponed the scheduled interviews for the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal, originally set for June 18–June 21. The decision was made in light of the recent death of Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts.
In a statement released on Sunday, JSC Secretary Winfridah Mokaya announced the postponement, expressing solidarity with the judicial service as it mourns the loss of Magistrate Kivuti. “In solidarity with the Judiciary to mourn and honour the life and service of Hon. Kivuti, the Commission has postponed the interviews for the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal scheduled for June 18th–21st, 2024,” the statement read.
Magistrate Kivuti passed away on Saturday after sustaining gunshot wounds inflicted by Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto during an active court session at the Makadara Law Courts. The Chief Inspector was subsequently shot dead by responding officers. A court orderly and two other officers also sustained injuries while trying to secure the courtroom and remove the magistrate from the scene.
The JSC apologized for any inconvenience caused by the postponement and assured that a revised interview schedule will be published in due course.
