The G7 has pledged to support President William Ruto’s and Africa’s call for global financial infrastructure reform, according to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed. The endorsement was made during the G7 Summit in Brindisi, Puglia, southern Italy, where President Ruto was the only African leader in attendance.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Mohamed highlighted the G7’s commitment to initiatives such as the G20 Compact with Africa and the Paris Pact for People and Planet. These initiatives aim to promote development, climate solutions, and private sector investment for Kenya, Africa, and the Global South.

Photos provided by State House showed President Ruto posing with French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden, underscoring his global recognition among peers at the summit.

The summit, attended by leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union, focused on international cooperation on critical issues. President Ruto used his platform to emphasize Africa’s potential for green industrialization, digital revolution, and innovation. He highlighted the continent’s vast renewable energy resources as a key factor in helping developed countries meet their Net Zero targets by 2050.

Ruto also called for reforms within the African Union (AU) to enhance trade, development, peace, stability, and global participation. “The current international financial architecture is faulty and unfair, and must be fixed,” Ruto stated, pointing out its neglect of developing countries’ interests.

The summit featured other notable figures, including Presidents Joe Biden (USA), Mohammed bin Zayed (UAE), and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (Turkey), as well as representatives from international organizations such as the United Nations, African Development Bank, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and OECD.

The G7’s support for Africa’s push for financial reform marks a significant step towards building a more inclusive and equitable international financial system, capable of addressing global challenges through collective action and shared values.
