In a fiery statement, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has issued a stern ultimatum to the police, demanding the immediate release of peaceful protesters detained during a recent demonstration in Nairobi. Owino, known for his vocal advocacy on civil rights, has given the authorities a 24-hour deadline to free the protesters without any charges. The lawmaker emphasized that the continued detention of these individuals is a blatant violation of their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.

Babu Owino’s declaration comes in the wake of heightened tensions between law enforcement and citizens exercising their right to protest. He warned that failure to comply with this ultimatum would result in legal action against the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, in his individual capacity. Owino argued that the actions of the police under Koome’s leadership represent a gross violation of fundamental freedoms guaranteed by Kenya’s Constitution of 2010. He asserted that it is imperative for the rule of law to be upheld and for the police to respect the rights of citizens.

The lawmaker’s call to action has resonated widely, with many Kenyans expressing their support for his stance on social media and other platforms. Civil society organizations have also backed Owino’s ultimatum, highlighting the importance of protecting democratic rights and holding those in power accountable. Legal experts have pointed out that pursuing charges against the Inspector General in a personal capacity could set a significant precedent, reinforcing the accountability of public officials.

In addition to his ultimatum, Babu Owino announced plans to mobilize further peaceful protests and legal measures to ensure that the rights of all Kenyans are respected. He called on fellow lawmakers, human rights defenders, and the general public to unite in demanding justice and the protection of constitutional rights. The escalating situation underscores the urgent need for dialogue and reform in the relationship between law enforcement and citizens.

The broader implications of this confrontation are significant, as it challenges the Kenyan government’s commitment to democratic principles and the protection of human rights. Observers are keenly watching how the authorities will respond, noting that the outcome could influence future interactions between the police and protesters. The international community has also been urged to monitor the developments closely, with calls for solidarity and support for the protection of civil liberties in Kenya.

As the deadline approaches, the pressure on the police and government officials continues to mount. The situation remains fluid, with potential repercussions for the political landscape and the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights in the country. Babu Owino’s ultimatum represents a pivotal moment in the fight for democratic freedoms, highlighting the critical need for accountability and respect for the rule of law in Kenya.
