The political climate in Kenya continues to heat up as Ernest Nyerere, Chief of Staff to Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, was arrested under mysterious circumstances early Tuesday morning.
According to Odhiambo, Nyerere was taken from his residence at 5 a.m. by individuals believed to be police officers, adding to the mounting number of Kenyans reportedly detained during the ongoing anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo addressed journalists, decrying the surge in abductions and pledging to uncover the identities of those responsible.
“Over the last 72 hours, Kenya has been drawn back to the dark era of a rogue, irrational police force operating through repressive, retrogressive, clandestine, illegal, extra-judicial tactics to forcefully quell public dissent,” Odhiambo declared.
The LSK issued a statement condemning these actions as a reversion to oppressive practices and vowed to hold accountable those behind the illegal detentions.
The protests, now entering their second week, have seen a surge in government actions against prominent figures and activists. Among those apprehended in recent days is popular social commentator Gabriel Oguda, who was allegedly abducted from his home in the early hours of Tuesday by suspected police operatives.
Others reported to have been taken into custody include John Frank Githaiga, alias Frenje, Drey Mwangi, Khalif Kairo, Osama Otero, and Shadrack Kiprono, alias Shad, a vocal participant in last week’s demonstrations. Kiprono was reportedly seized on Saturday night in Nairobi’s South B area.
