Former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter has been released from custody mere hours after his arrest in a dramatic incident in the Kileleshwa area of Nairobi.
The release came after a successful intervention by a group of lawyers led by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo.
Keter’s arrest, which took place on Sunday morning, was a shocking event that has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters. The former MP, who was detained at Kamukunji police station, denied the allegations against him, which included claims of arms trafficking and fraud.
Keter’s wife recounted the traumatic experience, stating that their children were left deeply shaken by the dramatic arrest. She described how their family vehicle was intercepted and Keter was forcefully taken away, an event that has since sparked significant public outrage.
Keter’s arrest drew swift reactions from various leaders and public figures. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Singóei condemned the manner of the arrest, stating on social media, “There is a procedure for effecting an arrest. This is not one of them. We must resist the temptation to adopt extra-legal means even in the pursuit of legitimate objectives.”
