Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu is at the center of controversy once again following claims of a partnership with Kotex Kenya to provide free tampons to schoolgirls in underprivileged areas.
On June 30, Nyamu posted that her foundation had secured a deal with Kotex Kenya to distribute free tampons to young girls, especially in Nairobi’s slum areas.
The post read,
“My foundation has had a series of meetings with Kotex Kenya to negotiate a good deal so that we supply free tampons in schools, particularly in our slums. I’m so excited.”
Nyamu, who has previously faced criticism for her vocal support of the recently withdrawn Finance Bill and her alignment with President William Ruto, presented the tampon initiative as a major achievement for her foundation. She expressed enthusiasm about educating girls in Nairobi on the use of tampons, highlighting the potential positive impact on their education and overall well-being.
However, the announcement was met with immediate backlash from the public, who accused Nyamu of using the issue of menstrual health to distract from her controversial political stances. Many commenters on her post vowed to boycott Kotex products, expressing skepticism about the sincerity and legitimacy of her claims.
The situation escalated when Kotex Kenya released a statement denying any partnership or negotiations with Nyamu or her foundation.
The company’s statement read:
“Kotex hereby confirms that no discussions or conversations have taken place with Karen Nyamu. Any assertions regarding a prospective partnership involving Kotex are entirely false. Our commitment remains steadfast in championing women’s progress for all Kenyans. We emphasize that Kotex does not engage in any political affiliations or endorsements. We maintain our dedication to transparency and accuracy in all communications.”
Kotex’s denial of Nyamu’s claims intensified public scrutiny and criticism of the senator. Nyamu, known for her controversial and often divisive statements, quickly responded via Instagram, accusing Kotex of succumbing to external pressure and threats.
“Kotex Kenya, don’t be chickens. A few threatening comments here and there and hours later you post this lol. So what exactly is fake? You had Enos and Cindy in your offices this week and we’re just waiting for communication on the best discounts you will give us,”
Nyamu also took the opportunity to address the negative comments on her post, suggesting that they reflected widespread misconceptions about tampons. She framed the controversy as a chance to educate the public and potentially expand Kotex’s market.
