As Nairobi grapples with ongoing protests demanding President William Ruto’s resignation, local businesses in certain areas have taken proactive measures to defend themselves against looting and vandalism that have plagued previous demonstrations.
In districts like Luthuli Avenue, Ronald Ngala Street, Mfangamano Street, and Hakati Road, shopkeepers have formed alliances to safeguard their livelihoods amidst the chaos.
Frustrated by recent incidents of looting during protests against the Finance Bill 2024, business owners armed themselves with makeshift weapons and banded together to ward off potential intruders.
“We are not against demonstrations, but we are against looting which has been happening in the process of demonstrations,” remarked a local business owner.
“We have come out armed against looters who exploit the protests for their own gain.”
The resolve to protect their businesses stems from a series of recent attacks where shops were vandalized and goods stolen.
Many shopkeepers recounted the devastating impact of previous looting incidents, emphasizing their determination to prevent further losses.
Even amidst the tension, some anti-riot police officers acknowledged the role of the business community in maintaining order. “These businessmen are crucial in protecting their businesses,” noted one officer on Ronald Ngala Street.
President William Ruto recently disclosed that the protests have caused approximately Sh2 billion in property and goods losses, underscoring the economic toll of the demonstrations.
In response to the escalating unrest, most shops in affected areas remained closed for the majority of the day as a precautionary measure against potential looting.
