A peaceful shopping trip turned tragic for a Form Four student in Isebania, Migori County, when he was fatally shot during an anti-government demonstration yesterday.
Antony Macharia, a 17-year-old student at Isebania Boys’ Secondary School, became an unintended casualty in the midst of protests that rocked the town.
According to Macharia’s family, he had left home to buy personal school supplies and was not involved in the protests. His mother, Miriam Patrick, expressed deep sorrow and anger over the loss, stating that her son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“He was on half-term break and was expected to return to school today, July 3rd, 2024. He went to town just to buy sugar and ended up being shot by a police officer,” she said, her voice trembling with grief.
Residents of Isebania have condemned the police for the shooting and have called on the government to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the incident. Community leaders have expressed their outrage, arguing that the use of lethal force was unjustified, especially on an innocent student.
On the same day, a middle-aged man from Rongo Sub-County was also shot and killed by police during protests.
