The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released photographs of 38 individuals believed to have engaged in unlawful activities during recent anti-government protests.
The protests, which have entered their third week, initially started as peaceful demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024 but have since turned violent due to the infiltration of criminal elements.
In a statement posted on X, the DCI urged the suspects to surrender to the nearest police station.
“The individuals whose images/photos appear below are wanted by the police for their unlawful activities during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations. We therefore advise them to report to the nearest police station for further police action,”
The DCI has also called upon the public to assist in locating the suspects. Citizens are encouraged to provide any relevant information anonymously via the hotline number 0800-7222-03 or by calling 999, 911, or 112.
This action comes after a stern warning from the DCI against individuals using the nationwide protests as a cover for criminal behavior. Originally peaceful, the protests were organized by Generation Z activists and aimed to highlight opposition to the Finance Bill.
However, the demonstrations have been marred by violence as rogue elements infiltrated the crowds, leading to widespread vandalism and looting in major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisii.
Businesses have suffered significant losses as shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and stalls have been targeted by the marauding gangs disguised as demonstrators.
The most severe incidents occurred during protests on June 25 and July 2, which saw extensive vandalism, muggings, and the torching of business premises and vehicles.
