In response to escalating violence and the infiltration of peaceful protests by violent groups, Medics for Kenya, a group of volunteer healthcare professionals, has announced the withdrawal of its medical camp services nationwide.
The decision, announced by co-founders Dr. Austin Omondi and Dr. Salim Ismael, comes as a protective measure for their volunteers amid increasingly dangerous conditions during demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024.
“With the change in maandamano atmosphere and the deployment of goons, we as Medics For Kenya, highly value the lives of our volunteers. As we say in the corridors of hospitals, ‘Your Safety Comes First’. Therefore, it is with much regret and pain that we announce that MedicsForKenya will withdraw their medical camp services all across the country,”
The group, comprising doctors, nurses, clinical officers, paramedics, psychologists, nutritionists, interns, and students, has been pivotal in providing emergency medical care to protesters across various locations, including Jamia Mosque, All Saints Cathedral, and Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.
Despite the withdrawal of on-site medical services, Medics for Kenya emphasized that their emergency hotlines will remain operational to coordinate with other emergency response providers and hospitals.
