Tragedy has struck the Kenyan entertainment industry following the death of renowned video vixen Sarah Njogu, popularly known as Sarah Gwan.
The 26-year-old fell from the second-floor balcony of a building in Seasons, Kasarani, under suspicious circumstances involving her three friends—two women and one man.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 25.
During an interview with citizen digital, Sarah’s mother, Mary Wanjiru, at around 2 a.m. received a frantic call from St. Francis Hospital in Kasarani informing her that her daughter had been admitted in critical condition following a dangerous fall. Shocked and desperate, Wanjiru discovered that the door to their house was locked and that her daughter had taken the padlock keys with her.
In a panic, Wanjiru squeezed herself through a tight spare window leading to her daughter’s balcony, raising alarm among the neighbors with her screams.
She quickly made her way to St. Francis Hospital, where she was confronted with the heart-wrenching sight of her daughter lying on a bed, blood oozing from her ears and a cut on her head.
Sarah had fallen from the balcony after an alleged altercation with her friends. Upon seeing her daughter’s critical condition, Wanjiru and the family made the decision to transfer Sarah to Kenyatta National Hospital for more advanced care, as St. Francis Hospital had requested a Ksh.150,000 deposit, which the family could not afford at the time.
Sarah’s father, Geoffrey Njogu, received the distressing call around 3 a.m. and immediately began the journey from Karatina to Nairobi. Arriving in Nairobi at approximately 7 a.m., he went straight to Kasarani Police Station to report the incident, suspecting foul play by Sarah’s friends. The police advised him to visit his daughter first before filing a formal statement.
After seeing Sarah’s condition, Geoffrey returned to the police station, and two officers accompanied him back to St. Francis Hospital. Sarah’s friends—identified only as Angie and Vanessa, along with an unnamed male companion—were arrested and taken into custody. However, they were released two days later on a Ksh.60,000 cash bail each.
Four days after the fall, Sarah succumbed to her injuries on the morning of June 29 at Kenyatta National Hospital. Her death has left her family devastated and searching for answers. They vehemently dispute the friends’ account, which suggested that Sarah had intentionally thrown herself off the balcony.
“I know my daughter. She was the strongest woman in my household. Sarah began her independence quite early in life. She was very strong at heart and a go-getter. There is no way Sarah would kill herself. That’s not the Sarah I knew,” said Mary Wanjiru, Sarah’s mother.
The late Sarah Gwan was a celebrated figure in Kenya’s entertainment scene, known for her vibrant presence in high-profile music videos for artists like Redsan, Willy Paul, Bensoul, Ommy Dimpoz, and Reckless.
