Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has proposed a spiritual cleansing of Parliament, emphasizing the necessity of restoring its sanctity and reinforcing its commitment to serving the people effectively.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Wednesday, Osotsi expressed deep concern over recent events that have tarnished the institution’s reputation and shaken public confidence.
“This Parliament needs to be cleansed because the blood of innocent Kenyans is within its precincts. I hope those of us who believe in prayers will pray so that we can continue as a sacred and respected institution.”
Senator Osotsi’s appeal comes after a tumultuous week that saw anti-Finance Bill protesters breach Parliament, setting parts of the building on fire in a display of unprecedented rage. The chaos erupted after police shot several demonstrators outside the Parliament Buildings, exacerbating tensions and sparking widespread condemnation.
“What happened to Parliament? Parliament was a holy institution that was always on the side of the people,” Osotsi lamented.
On Tuesday last week, peaceful protests against the Finance Bill, 2024 turned violent outside Parliament, resulting in clashes between police and demonstrators, who used live ammunition and set fires, causing significant damage and burning at least two vehicles.
