Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has been appointed to lead the United Kingdom Election Observation Mission as the country prepares for its 2024 General Election on Thursday, July 4.
The mission, comprising parliamentarians from 18 Commonwealth nations, aims to ensure the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
Amollo expressed his commitment to upholding democratic standards during a press briefing following his appointment.
“I welcome this opportunity to work with Commonwealth parliamentarians to observe the 2024 General Election in the United Kingdom,” he stated.
“Election missions play a crucial role in strengthening democracies by ensuring adherence to international obligations and standards.”
The mission will focus on observing every aspect of the electoral process, from voter registration to polling and counting procedures.
“Our role will be to observe the democratic process and provide impartial assessments. We look forward to observing electoral practices across various contexts and regions within the United Kingdom, reflecting its diverse electoral landscape.”
Joining Amollo in the observation mission are parliamentarians from countries such as Malawi, St Lucia, Seychelles, Trinidad and Tobago, and others representing a broad spectrum of Commonwealth nations.
Their collective goal is to assess the fairness and transparency of the election, offering recommendations aligned with international best practices.
The involvement of international observers underscores the UK’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, bolstering public confidence in the electoral process.
