The burial of 12-year-old Kennedy Onyango, who was fatally shot during the recent anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests in Rongai, Kajiado County, was abruptly halted.
According to comedian Eric Omondi, the family was forced to delay the funeral after police officers intercepted the procession and took the boy’s body following a court order.
Omondi shared the incident on his official Instagram page, revealing that the family was stopped by a police roadblock near their home in Homa Bay. The officers then took the body, which is now being held at Kirindo Mortuary in Mbita.
“We got to Homa Bay to bury the 12-year-old Kennedy, and just before reaching the homestead, we found a police roadblock. They took the boy. Whoever is responsible, please allow this woman to mourn in peace and bury her son. She has suffered enough,” Omondi pleaded.
His mother, in a tearful plea, called on President William Ruto to intervene and allow her to bury her son.
“You have all the powers. After God, you are the second most powerful person in Kenya. Those who have taken my baby are under your authority. Ruto, return my baby,” she implored.
The family had planned to bury Kennedy on Saturday, with a grave already prepared at their home in Homa Bay. However, his mother alleges that police officers took her son’s body a day before the burial.
“Yesterday I travelled with my son home for burial, and the grave is already dug. When we reached Mbita, police officers took my son, and until now, I haven’t seen him.”
President Ruto, addressing the nation on Friday, refuted claims that police officers were responsible for Onyango’s death. Instead, he stated that the boy was shot by a criminal who had stolen a gun from a police officer and fired indiscriminately.
“Kennedy Onyango was shot by a criminal who snatched a gun from an officer and started shooting indiscriminately,” Ruto said during an X-Space engagement with the youth.
