Police are on the lookout for a man who left a pistol at a church’s pulpit during a service at the Instant Miracle Centre in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums on Sunday afternoon, July 7.
The man, described as middle-aged, approached the pulpit during a call for repentance. As other worshipers stood to confess their sins, he drew a Colt Double Action 45 pistol from his groin area and placed it on the table before fleeing the scene on foot.
The congregation, stunned by the unfolding drama, scrambled for safety, unsure of what was happening.
According to three church leaders who were conducting the service, the lead pastor had invited the congregants to stand and repent their sins.
“We were in the midst of the service, calling for repentance when he walked up and placed the gun on the pulpit. Everyone was in shock, not knowing if he meant harm or was genuinely seeking redemption,” recounted one of the church leaders.
Police were promptly called to the scene and confirmed that the pistol was real, though it lacked a magazine at the time of recovery.
“It was a Colt Double Action 45, a serious weapon. We’re currently investigating its origin and whether it has been involved in any criminal activities. We believe he intended to give up the gun but chose a rather unconventional and startling way to do it,” stated the spokesperson.
The firearm has since been taken for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in any crimes.
