Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has publicly renounced the recent calls for national dialogue initiated by President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
In a post on social media platform X, Wamalwa expressed his disapproval with a succinct statement:
“I am not boarding!”
This makes him the second prominent figure from the Azimio coalition to question the calls for dialogue, following closely behind Martha Karua.
Karua had earlier voiced her concerns, stating that for the talks to be successful, all parties involved must demonstrate genuine goodwill, otherwise, it would amount to nothing more than a trap.
The call for national dialogue emerged during the signing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Bill, 2024. The Bill is a significant outcome of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) talks.
However, Wamalwa, a key representative of the Opposition in these talks, has distanced himself from the final report, citing dissatisfaction with the handling of critical issues, particularly the cost of living.
“I didn’t and will not append my signature to the NADCO report, and have not and will not accept any sitting allowance for the same because I believe we did not do justice to the single most important issue to Kenyans, i.e., the cost of living,” Wamalwa stated.
In contrast, President Ruto and Raila Odinga are gearing up for a six-day multi-sectorial forum set to commence on Monday, July 15. The forum aims to foster national dialogue and seek lasting solutions to Kenya’s pressing issues.
