Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has called on senior politicians to back the Gen Z movement, emphasizing that the era for older politicians is coming to an end.
In a video Sonko stated, “Our time for politics is over, let us support the young generation.”
Drawing comparisons with other African countries where younger leaders are taking charge, Sonko urged Kenyan politicians to allow learned young individuals to take up leadership roles in government while senior leaders provide mentorship.
“We can have some of these Gen Z individuals occupy positions such as senators, MPs, and even governors and perhaps a few senior politicians at the top can nurture them,” he said.
Sonko praised the Gen Z movement for their efforts in opposing the ‘punitive’ Finance Bill, 2024, and highlighted his role in empowering young people during the anti-Finance Bill protests.
“During the protests, I dispatched approximately ten ambulances and provided water to the demonstrators,” he added.
Sonko also shared his pride in seeing his own children participate in the protests, saying, “My daughter and son were also present at the protests. This made me immensely proud of both Gen Z and Kenyans in general.”
Sonko also condemned the government’s use of excessive force and deployment of the military against the Gen Z protesters.
“I disagree with the actions that saw our children killed. That was very wrong,” he said, urging President Ruto to take action against officers found to have shot at protesters.
