President William Ruto has appointed Deputy Inspector-General Douglas Kanja Kirocho as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service (NPS) following the resignation of Japhet Koome.
The announcement was made on July 12, 2024, as Koome stepped down from his position amid heavy criticism over the police response to recent nationwide protests.
“Pending the nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of the Inspector-General of the National Police Service, the Head of State has, in accordance with Section 16 of the National Police Service Act, designated Kanja,” a statement from State House read.
Douglas Kanja, now the acting Inspector-General, has an extensive background in law enforcement. Since 2018, he has served as the Commandant of the General Service Unit.
His experience includes stints as the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Commandant of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), and the Director of Operations at the NPS. Kanja’s service record spans multiple regions of Kenya, including Nairobi, Coast, Eastern, and Rift Valley.
