The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has reported that 50 Kenyans have died in connection with the anti-government protests that began four weeks ago.
Since the protests started on Tuesday, June 18, KNCHR has been actively monitoring compliance with human rights principles and standards during the demonstrations.
According to the commission, the fatalities include individuals who succumbed to injuries while receiving medical treatment, as well as bodies discovered under the debris of the burnt Sunbeam Mall in Nairobi.
“The Commission has been offering its support to victims of violations associated with the protests and providing advice on the rights and responsibilities associated with the right to protest,” KNCHR stated.
The reported deaths are distributed across several regions: Nairobi (21), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (2), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (2), Kisumu (3), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1), Nandi (1), Embu (1), Homa Bay (1), Nyeri (1), and Bungoma (1).
Additionally, the commission reported that 413 individuals have been injured nationwide in relation to the protests.
“The Commission urges proper investigations into the killings and injuries. Those found culpable, whether civilian or security agents, should be charged. In addition, the Commission shall pursue command responsibility for all documented instances of police brutality and excesses. We also call upon the President to honor his commitment to respecting the rule of law by issuing a zero-tolerance directive on human rights violations to all deployed security agencies,” KNCHR emphasized.
The commission also reported that 59 people have been abducted or are missing, despite ongoing calls to cease abductions and arbitrary arrests. Furthermore, 682 individuals have been arbitrarily arrested.
“We condemn the abductions and arrests and demand the immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained persons in relation to the protests,” the commission declared.
