National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced that the Gen Z protests, which erupted on June 25, 2024, caused damage estimated at Ksh94 million.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Wetang’ula provided details on the extent of the destruction, which included broken television screens, damaged furniture, and ruined equipment, as well as significant harm to buildings.
The damage assessment and valuation were conducted by an insurance firm, which will cover the costs of replacing the destroyed items and repairing the affected structures.
“That is the damage we suffered. So the insurance firm has taken up the matter,” Wetang’ula stated.
He reassured the public that taxpayers will not incur any costs related to the repairs and replacements.
The protests, led by the youth group known as Gen Z, targeted the parliament building in response to the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which has since been withdrawn.
Despite the significant property damage, Wetang’ula confirmed that no Members of Parliament or staff were injured or lost their lives during the violent protest.
