President William Ruto has officially nominated Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police, succeeding Japhet Koome who resigned on July 12, 2024.
Kanja, who had been serving as the acting IG since Koome’s departure, brings with him a wealth of experience accumulated over a distinguished four-decade career in law enforcement.
Starting his career in 1985, Kanja has held numerous pivotal positions within the Kenya Police Service.
He previously served as Deputy Inspector General and Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) for five years.
His extensive career also includes roles such as Deputy Commandant of the GSU, County Police Commander for Kilifi County, Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, and Chief Armourer at the Police Headquarters.
Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service, praised Kanja’s extensive background, stating;
“The I.G Nominee has undertaken extensive security-related training at home and abroad. A career police officer who has served for a cumulative period of thirty-nine years.”
