In a dramatic turn within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a faction of party members has called for the removal of Cleophas Malala as Secretary-General.
The group, led by Lawyer Joe Khalende, alleges that Malala has been undermining the party’s progress and obstructing the efforts of the newly formed Broad-Based Government, led by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, Khalende, who has declared himself the new acting Secretary-General, accused Malala of acting in bad faith.
“Malala has abdicated his role and duty as the SG of the ruling party,” Khalende stated.
He criticized Malala for allegedly supporting the TAWE movement, which contradicts the UDA’s policies and the formation of the broad-based government.
Khalende further claimed that Malala had failed to manage the party’s grassroots elections effectively, which have faced numerous challenges, including chaos and court interventions.
The faction has accused Malala of frustrating the party’s recruitment and election processes and confirmed that a show-cause letter was issued to him without resolution.
The group has expressed commitment to supporting the new broad-based government and advancing grassroots elections.
