In a surprising turn of events, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party’s National Executive Committee has revoked the appointment of Cleophas Malala as Secretary General.
The decision was announced following a meeting held on Friday morning, during which the Committee resolved to appoint Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar as the interim Secretary General.
The Committee’s statement revealed that the meeting was convened at the request of its members to address recent developments within the party and national issues affecting its operations.
“The National Executive Committee was convened today to discuss, deliberate, and agree on the way forward based on the events of the last few days in the Party and fundamentally, the events of the last few weeks in our Country,” the statement read.
In addition to the leadership change, the Committee directed the National Elections Board to proceed with necessary adjustments and continue with the first phase of grassroots elections across the counties.
The party plans to implement a series of governing and administrative measures aimed at accelerating its agenda and fostering a more inclusive and consultative organizational approach.
The move comes amid confusion within the party, as Chairperson Cecily Mbarire had earlier called for a National Executive Council meeting at the Hustler Plaza.
Cleophas Malala, who was at the center of the turmoil, sought a court injunction to postpone the meeting, arguing for it to be rescheduled to the following week.
