In a spirited reception, acting Secretary General Hassan Omar was celebrated with cheers and dancing at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Headquarters on Friday.

Omar’s supporters, waving tree branches, chanted slogans in his honor, marking a vibrant endorsement of his interim leadership.

The festive atmosphere contrasted sharply with recent turmoil within the party.

Earlier in the day, the UDA National Executive Committee (NEC) officially revoked Cleophas Malala’s appointment as Secretary General.

This decision came after intense internal disagreements and calls from some members for Malala’s removal.

“Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the Secretary General on an interim basis,” read the official statement from the NEC.

Omar’s appointment replaces Veronica Maina, who was nominated to the Senate.

The NEC’s decision aims to address the internal conflicts that have plagued the party in recent months.
