Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel, who was recently released from a life sentence, has faced severe health issues that contributed significantly to his early release.

Kartel, known for his influential career in dancehall music and collaborations with artists like Rihanna and Jay-Z, was granted freedom on July 31, 2024, following a ruling by the Jamaica Court of Appeal.

Kartel’s release came after his 2014 murder conviction was overturned due to juror misconduct, as determined by the U.K. Privy Council.

The decision to release him was further influenced by his deteriorating health conditions. The court noted that Kartel’s ongoing battle with Graves’ disease and a heart condition had rendered him unable to withstand a retrial.

Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that leads to excessive production of thyroid hormone, has caused Kartel severe complications.

The condition can result in thyroid eye disease, characterized by bulging and irritated eyes, among other symptoms.

Additionally, Kartel’s heart condition has compounded his health problems.

Kartel’s defense highlighted the harsh conditions of his incarceration, including inadequate air circulation and lack of water, which exacerbated his health issues.

A sworn affidavit presented by his defense team warned that without proper medical treatment, Kartel’s conditions could become fatal.

The court’s decision to release Kartel underscores the severe impact of his health challenges and the inadequate prison conditions he faced.

As the dancehall artist prepares to resume his career, the focus remains on his recovery and the broader implications for prisoners with severe health conditions.
