Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec has become an internet sensation thanks to his relaxed approach at the Paris Olympics.
The 51-year-old former officer of the Turkish Gendarmerie teamed up with Sevval Ilayda Tarhan to clinch silver in the mixed team 10-metre air pistol event, but it was his nonchalant demeanor that truly captured global attention.
Dikec’s casual appearance at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, where he shot with one hand tucked in his pocket and only a yellow earplug for hearing protection, stood in stark contrast to the heavily outfitted competitors who typically wear visors, ear defenders, and shooting lenses.
His silver hair, intense gaze, and a jersey resembling a regular t-shirt further intrigued netizens, turning him into a viral sensation.
The French embassy in Turkey even joined the online buzz, posting “Be cool like Yusuf Dikec” on X, highlighting the shooter’s laid-back charm.
Despite the online frenzy, Dikec, who has returned to Turkey, has yet to comment publicly on his newfound fame.
Teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan defended Dikec’s choice of gear, explaining, “I’m proud of him, but it’s not that he does not have equipment.
He’s used to shooting with regular glasses and does not need extra gear. It’s a personal thing and he’s comfortable that way.”
Dikec himself expressed surprise at the level of recognition, telling Turkish media, “I didn’t anticipate such a level of recognition. Since I shoot with both eyes open, I don’t find the equipment very comfortable.”
