Hassan Joho, the nominee for Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, declared a net worth of Ksh2.3 billion during his vetting before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments on Sunday.
Joho, who is also a former Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), attributed his substantial wealth to his diverse business ventures.
His declaration, totaling Ksh2,361,332,249, includes investments in developed and undeveloped properties, including homes in Mombasa, Vipingo, Nairobi, and Malindi.
He also mentioned shares in various property holdings and family businesses, as well as valuable items such as watches and jewelry.
In response to queries from National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah about the inclusion of family wealth, Joho clarified that his net worth only reflects his personal shares in family businesses, not the entire family estate.
During the vetting, Joho addressed past allegations of drug trafficking, firmly denying any involvement and emphasizing that his businesses are legitimate.
He highlighted that he had faced thorough investigations during his tenure as Mombasa governor and had been cleared of any wrongdoing.
He expressed gratitude for his achievements and reassured the MPs of his integrity.
