Police Seek Court Order to Retrieve Swallowed Memory Card from Suspect in Fake Title Deeds Case

Authorities are requesting a court order to detain a suspect at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to retrieve a memory card he allegedly swallowed in an attempt to destroy evidence linked to a fake title deeds syndicate.

On Monday, State prosecutor James Gachoka petitioned Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi to grant an ex parte order allowing Joel Kakuli Mwangangi to be examined at KNH.

Gachoka revealed that Mwangangi swallowed the memory card during his arrest on August 1, 2024, to prevent the recovery of incriminating evidence.

Despite attempts to recover the card through natural expulsion, the effort was unsuccessful.

Gachoka noted that Mwangangi was arrested alongside five other suspects—Benedict Mwangangi Ngala, Vincent Boaz Owang, Titus Wambua Kithuku, Sylvester Mwanzia Mwanthi, and Eric Omondi Ojwang—on charges related to a fraudulent title deed operation.

During the arrest, police seized 399 fake title deeds and other documents, printers, and stamps from their premises.

The prosecution has requested that Detective Nicholaus Osuri Otieno be granted 30 days to finalize the investigation into charges of conspiracy, forgery, and fraud.
