An intense fire early this morning engulfed Mukuru Kwa Njenga, demolishing homes and churches near Muhindi Mweusi Supermarket.
The blaze, which began around 1 a.m., ravaged ten blocks before the arrival of Nairobi’s fire services, leaving extensive damage.
Despite efforts from local residents to control the flames, the fire spread rapidly, exacerbating the already strained fire safety situation in the area.
The exact monetary value of the destruction remains undetermined, adding to the community’s distress.
This latest fire comes just days after a significant blaze at Toi Market, compounding the grief of the local population.
Residents have long expressed frustration over inadequate fire safety measures and the slow response from fire services.
“We’ve been begging for a proper fire station in Mukuru for years,” one local resident complained on social media.
The delayed response from Nairobi’s fire department left residents to battle the fire with limited resources until professional help arrived.
The inefficiency of the response has sparked renewed calls for improved fire safety infrastructure in Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
Local authorities, including Nairobi County police boss Adamson Bungei, have acknowledged the severity of the situation but have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
“The exact cause of the fires remains unknown,” Bungei stated last year. “What’s clear is that the community suffers greatly each time, and more needs to be done to address this issue.”
