The death toll from a devastating landslide at Kampala’s Kiteezi garbage dump has climbed to 21, according to police reports on Sunday.
The collapse occurred late Friday night following heavy rains in recent weeks, causing a massive mound of waste to bury homes situated on the edge of the landfill site.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with at least 14 people rescued so far, though authorities fear more individuals may still be trapped under the debris.
The landslide has sparked an urgent response from President Yoweri Museveni, who has directed the prime minister to coordinate the evacuation of residents living near the landfill.
The government has also launched an investigation into the incident and promised to take action against any officials found guilty of negligence, as stated by the Inspectorate of Government on social media platform X.
In response to the disaster, the Red Cross has established temporary shelters for those displaced by the landslide.
Kiteezi, the city’s only landfill, had long been criticized for its environmental hazards and poor conditions.
