At least 39 people remain missing following a massive garbage landslide in Kampala over the weekend, which has so far claimed 26 lives, according to police reports.

The disaster struck the Kiteezi dumpsite in the northern district after heavy rains caused the site to collapse on Saturday, burying homes, livestock, and residents under heaps of rancid waste.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango confirmed that the confirmed death toll includes 35 community members and four garbage collectors.

Preliminary recovery operations revealed that at least five of the deceased were children.

Rescue efforts are ongoing as excavators work tirelessly to sift through the massive mounds of debris in the hope of finding survivors.

The disaster has prompted a widespread search and recovery operation as authorities and volunteers continue their efforts amid challenging conditions.
