Tens of tourists were among hundreds of motorists stranded for hours on Tuesday morning in a massive traffic jam along the Nakuru-Narok Highway.
The gridlock was triggered by residents of Olokurto Ward who took to the streets to protest the poor state of roads in their area.
According to witnesses, the residents’ demonstration aimed to draw attention to the deteriorating condition of the Lengetia-Olpusimoru Road, a key route within the region.
They called on the area’s Member of Parliament, Agnes Mantaine, to intervene and facilitate the road’s urgent repair and construction.
Videos shared online showed a long line of vehicles, including those carrying tourists, stuck along the busy highway as the protest unfolded.
As the demonstration intensified, the traffic jam worsened, affecting both lanes of the highway and leaving motorists with little choice but to seek alternative routes.
The chaos forced some passengers to abandon their vehicles and continue their journey on foot as they navigated the gridlock.
The incident underscored the frustrations of local residents over infrastructure issues and the impact such protests can have on vital transportation routes.
Local authorities have yet to respond to the residents’ demands, as the situation highlights the ongoing challenges of road maintenance and development in the region.
