Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has issued a firm directive ensuring that no qualified student will be denied university admission due to the non-payment of household contributions.
Speaking on Wednesday, Ogamba emphasized that all students who meet the qualifications for university entry will secure a spot in their chosen institutions, regardless of their immediate financial situation.
“The vice-chancellors of public universities have been directed to admit all qualified students without exception,” Ogamba stated.
“We are committed to ensuring that no deserving student is denied the opportunity to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.”
The Education CS revealed that university administrators have also been instructed to arrange suitable accommodation for first-year students, with the understanding that the required fees will be settled once the upkeep component is disbursed.
Ogamba assured the public that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the National Treasury to expedite the release of necessary funds.
He encouraged students facing financial difficulties or with questions about fees and funding to contact university support teams during admission or reach out through the Higher Education Portal at www.hef.co.ke.
“All appeals will be processed within three weeks from the date of application to ensure timely financial support for students in need,” he added.
In light of potential delays, the deadline for funding applications has been extended to December 31, 2024.
Ogamba also welcomed recommendations from Parliament and other stakeholders aimed at strengthening the New Funding Model and improving the Means Testing Instrument.
He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to develop a sustainable legal and policy framework for financing higher education.
