Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, was reportedly blocked from entering President William Ruto’s Townhall meeting with university students at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The meeting was organized to allow the President to explain the new University Funding Model and how it aims to improve the education sector.
According to reports, Babu Owino arrived at KICC intending to attend the session, given his reputation as a staunch advocate for university students.
In response to inquiries on social media, Owino confirmed that he was indeed barred from entering the meeting, which is why he was notably absent despite his strong influence on matters concerning student welfare.
“I went, but they denied me access,” stated the youthful leader, who did not provide further details on why he was denied entry.
His exclusion raised questions, especially since he is known for being vocal on issues affecting students and could have played a critical role in shaping the discussion around the new funding model.
Sources suggest that the MP’s exclusion was linked to his outspoken criticism of the new University Funding Model, which he has labeled as burdensome.
Prior to the event, Owino had urged leaders who were planning to attend the meeting to resist the model, calling it a threat to affordable education in Kenya.
“Student leaders meeting Ruto today must tell him the truth. The new funding model is a monster that will ruin our education system.
Our brothers and sisters will be unable to access the education they need to transform their lives and this country. Say no to this model,” Owino had earlier stated.
Despite Owino’s absence, the townhall meeting proceeded as scheduled. President Ruto took the opportunity to outline the benefits of the new model and its potential to enhance access to education.
As of now, the government has not officially addressed Babu Owino’s claims or explained why he was barred from the event.
