Teachers across Kenya have launched widespread protests in various counties today.
The strikes stem from frustrations over the government’s failure to implement the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) had issued a strike notice demanding action on salary increments, the conversion of junior secondary school teachers, and the recruitment of additional teachers.
The unrest has been exacerbated by delays in implementing the CBA’s second phase, which was due on July 1, 2024, covering salaries and allowances.
Despite the government’s appeal to teachers to delay their protests while awaiting the passage of a revised finance bill, the teachers remain adamant, citing continuous unmet promises.
These protests signify deeper grievances over long-standing issues in the education sector, including concerns about teacher welfare and working conditions.
The situation reflects growing tensions between educators and government officials, with the potential for widespread disruptions if a resolution is not reached soon.
