Hundreds of Meru residents have taken to the streets, demanding that Governor Kawira Mwangaza vacate office.
The protesters, frustrated by her leadership, marched to the county government offices, where they blocked roads and lit fires.
Tensions escalated as the police were forced to disperse the crowd with teargas.
The protestors’ main grievance stems from their belief that Mwangaza is occupying the office illegally.
They claim she “sneaked” into the county offices using an unmarked vehicle.
This demonstration follows her impeachment by the Meru County Assembly, with 40 out of 69 members voting to remove her from office, a decision upheld by the Senate last week.
Residents are determined to ensure Mwangaza does not continue in office, stating they would return early the next morning to block her entry.
The situation remains tense, with the protesters calling for her immediate replacement by Deputy Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia.
