A shocking incident unfolded on Jogoo Road near the Uchumi stage, where a matatu from the Embassava Sacco and its passengers were attacked by a notorious roadside tout, commonly referred to as a “Kamagera.”
The confrontation began when the Kamagera, part of a group infamous for extorting money from matatu crews, approached the matatu as it made a routine stop to drop off a passenger.
The tout demanded payment from the conductor, but the crew stood firm and refused to comply with his demands. This refusal sparked the Kamagera’s fury, leading him to turn violent.
He viciously attacked the conductor, leaving him with injuries.
A passenger seated in the front row, witnessing the brutal assault, bravely stepped in to try and stop the attack.
However, his attempt to de-escalate the situation only made things worse, as the assailant retaliated by striking the passenger on the back with a large stone, causing serious injury.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control as the enraged Kamagera continued his rampage, smashing the matatu’s windscreen and shattering the driver’s window, leaving the vehicle heavily damaged.
Despite the chaos, the driver, conductor, and the injured passenger managed to report the incident to the authorities, where they were issued OB numbers to document the case.
In response to this violent outburst, the National Police Service swiftly launched an ambush operation, leading to the arrest of the Kamagera involved in the attack.
The suspects are now being held at Makongeni Police Station as investigations into the incident continue.
The violent nature of the assault and the damage inflicted on the matatu highlight the dangers faced by matatu crews and passengers at the hands of rogue enforcers like the Kamagera.
