At least 16 pupils have tragically lost their lives following a devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County, late last night.

The fire, which engulfed one of the school’s dormitories, left 15 students dead at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident, noting that 14 other pupils sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for specialized treatment.

“We are investigating the cause of the fire and will take the necessary action once the facts are established,” she said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and fears remain that more bodies could be discovered once the scene is fully processed.

Response teams, including the National Police Service’s Disaster Management Unit, are on the ground to assist in the recovery and investigation efforts.

The school community is in shock as authorities work to establish the cause of the tragic fire.
