ODM party leader Raila Odinga has officially handed over the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to his long-time ally, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, as he shifts focus to his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, during a press briefing by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
Sifuna stated that Odinga’s decision was driven by the demands of his AUC campaign, which required his full attention.
In light of the grueling campaign by our party leader and the need for him to focus on the AUC chairmanship, he has designated Anyang’ Nyong’o to chair any or such meetings of this committee that may become necessary during periods of his absence,” Sifuna explained.
The move came after a closed-door meeting of the ODM Central Management Committee, chaired by Odinga, where party members discussed internal affairs.
Governor Nyong’o will temporarily lead the party, chairing meetings and handling party affairs during Odinga’s absence.
Sifuna also addressed speculation surrounding the party’s internal decisions, dismissing any rumors.
“There is therefore no need for the sort of speculation, innuendo, and propaganda that surround our meetings,” he clarified.
