Today, traders at Muthurua Market joined forces with those from Marikiti and Wakulima Markets to protest a relocation plan announced by the Nairobi County Government.
The plan involves moving the traders to a new market along Kangundo Road as part of efforts to decongest the Central Business District (CBD).
The protestors, upset about the lack of consultation, argue that relocating will harm their businesses due to the increased distance from their customers in the city center.
The protest caused significant disruptions, blocking several key roads in the CBD, including Haile Selassie Avenue, Jogoo Road, and Landhies Road, leading to massive traffic jams and delays for commuters.
The traders, who deal in fresh produce like potatoes, onions, and fruits, voiced concerns that the new location would reduce their earnings and limit their access to regular clients.
The County Government defended the relocation as necessary to ease congestion in the city and improve traffic flow, but the protests have highlighted the need for better communication and consultation with affected communities before making such major decisions.
