On Monday, police officers arrested prominent activist Morara Kebaso following a raid at his main office in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi.
The arrest, which has sparked widespread condemnation, remains shrouded in mystery as authorities have yet to disclose the reason for his detention.
Kebaso’s lawyer, who pursued the police convoy to the Nairobi Regional Headquarters, disclosed that strict measures were imposed to bar any external access to the activist.
“They have restricted access and have strict instructions from the top not to allow any person to access Morara, including lawyers, media personnel, and any other persons,” the lawyer said while addressing the press.
The situation has prompted criticism from human rights advocates, who accused the police of violating constitutional rights.
“The question is, what type of police do we have here? They have no respect for the constitution or the rule of law. The head is rotten, all the way from the Minister of Interior to the officers holding Morara. We should condemn this in the strongest way possible.”
Kebaso’s arrest came barely an hour after he posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) condemning the brutal abduction and torture of Mombasa-based blogger Bruce John.
In his video, Kebaso detailed Bruce’s ordeal, recounting how 20 men abducted the blogger under the pretense of escorting him to apologize to the Mombasa Governor.
John was then reportedly tortured and sodomized by the assailants.
