On October 8, 2024, chaos erupted at the Nyamira County Assembly when a brawl broke out among MCAs.
The dispute arose after Speaker Enock Okero refused to allow Gesima Ward MCA, Atuti Nyameino, to table an impeachment motion aimed at ousting him.
Tensions flared as Okero tried to block Nyameino’s attempts to introduce the motion, leading to a physical altercation in the assembly chambers.
The confrontation highlighted deeper political divisions within the county, following a recent failed attempt to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo.
In response to Okero’s actions, some MCAs physically forced him out of his office, seizing documents and escorting him to his car.
The Speaker is accused of favoring certain factions in the assembly, especially those opposing the impeachment of Governor Nyaribo, which has worsened the ongoing political rift.
This incident is part of a broader struggle for power within the Nyamira County Assembly. Okero was criticized for allegedly mishandling assembly proceedings, including accusations of failing to allow important reports to be tabled, which fueled the MCAs’ dissatisfaction.
His indefinite suspension followed, with interim Speaker Julius Matwere taking over the proceedings.
