Chaos erupted at the Nyamira County Assembly as police clashed with a group of youth protesting outside the assembly.
The tensions were high due to political rifts within the assembly, primarily surrounding the impeachment motion against Governor Amos Nyaribo.
Protesters, believed to be either supporting or opposing the governor’s impeachment, were involved in a standoff with the police as they tried to gain access to the assembly precinct.
The assembly had been heavily guarded, and only staff members were allowed inside to prevent further disruptions.
The unrest reflects ongoing political struggles in Nyamira, where factions within the assembly have been divided over the leadership of both Governor Nyaribo and Speaker Enoch Okero.
Recently, Okero was forcefully ousted by a faction of the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) due to allegations of corruption and favoritism.
The incident marked a new chapter in Nyamira’s leadership wrangles, with MCAs exchanging blows inside the assembly, halting proceedings.
This disruption follows earlier attempts to impeach Governor Nyaribo, which narrowly failed when only 22 out of 34 MCAs voted for his removal, falling one vote short of the required number.
These events have left the county in a state of heightened tension, with opposing groups continuing to vie for political dominance.
