MP Kimani Ichung’wah, the National Assembly Majority Leader, has publicly declared his support for an impeachment motion aimed at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking in Kikuyu, Ichung’wah confirmed that he had signed the impeachment motion, highlighting concerns over internal divisions within the government and rejecting what he described as ethnic-based politics associated with Gachagua.
Ichung’wah emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza government needs to focus on development and national unity rather than regional and ethnic politics, which he believes are detrimental to the country’s progress.
This move has sparked widespread political speculation, with some leaders accusing Ichung’wah of using the impeachment to position himself and other political figures in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala even suggested that Ichung’wah, along with Governor Cecily Mbarire, was orchestrating the ouster as part of a broader strategy to gain political influence in future elections.
The motion to impeach Gachagua requires the support of 117 MPs to be introduced in Parliament and 233 votes to pass. Reports indicate that more than 300 signatures have already been collected, signaling strong momentum for the initiative.
However, the political maneuvering behind this motion suggests it may have far-reaching consequences, especially for the internal dynamics of the ruling coalition.
